What this kind of evidence can show

Mental health evidence may show contact with services, medication, therapy, care planning, crisis support, referrals, risk planning, support from another person or effects on daily-living and mobility activities. A therapist letter is one possible source, not a requirement or guarantee. See also PIP evidence explained and PIP eligibility explained.

What it may not show

A diagnosis or letter may not show how someone is affected on most days, whether help is needed, how symptoms fluctuate, or how PIP activities apply. Evidence may also be limited to what a professional has recorded.

Where someone may see this requested

Mental health evidence may be considered during a PIP claim, review, assessment, mandatory reconsideration or appeal. It may also be relevant when someone is reading a PIP assessment report or decision letter.

What to check officially

  • GOV.UK PIP pages should be checked for the current claim and assessment process.
  • Citizens Advice PIP evidence and assessment guidance may help explain what supporting evidence is for.
  • For Scotland, Adult Disability Payment guidance should be checked because PIP has been replaced for many people there.
